Kew Gardens is host to one of the largest collections of plants from around the world; it was created in 1772 by combining two royal estates. Under the patronage of George III Kew Gardens developed into one of the foremost centres of horticultural research. In 1841 the former royal gardens were given to the nation and now display 40,000 different plants. Victorian green houses stand crammed full of luxuriant tropical growth, recreating the environment of plants from every habitat.
